I've never attempted to scratch build anything before. So, why try it now? Well, in my case, I couldn't quite find what I was looking for style-wise on the market. Since I'm going for a specific period of racing, newer style buildings just don't look right on the PDR. I've designed my own version of what I think a pit building would look like during that time. Besides, once you try this, it's actually quite fun!
I've had many folks email me and ask how to make something like this. Just get some basswood, matte-board, or your material of choice, draw out a sketch, and go for it. That is how little talent you need. I've never built anything like this layout, or buildings for that matter. I used 3\32nd Basswood and a little balsawood, which cut beautifully with a good craft knife. I'm building the pits into sections, so I can move them when needed. The top glass portion is a Scalextric car case cut down and modified.
The entire assembly is not attached to the base so that it is easily removable from the rest of the scenery. I've still got a TON of detailing to do, but I'm happy with my first attempt. Luf's Targa has a great write up on how to build buildings. Take a look at that, and then GET TO WORK!
Pit Buildings
These are some early stages - no paint, and just put together.
Here are a few shots with as it continues with paint, painted rubber marks in the pit area, more banners, and finally some figures (still have more to paint!)
Lights!
I recently added lights to my pits. I used a nice little kit from eBay that contained 10 grain of wheat bulbs along with a small transformer. They were very easy to install and power up. Makes a nice difference in lighting up the pit area stalls!
Grandstands
These are my Artin Grandstands that are modified. I've painted these to match my track and added a little surprise underneath the stands! All extras made with Basswood.
TV Tower & Scoreboard
I can't take credit for these two beautiful structures. My good friend, Brad Korando made them for me. They are comprised of wood and feature some very nice signage. Brad is THE master of structures!
Repainting Figures
I picked up some of the Monogram figures that were just released. Since they all looked the same, I painted several different racing teams out of them. Easy to do!
