Strombecker Chaparral 2D conversion

Being a Jim Hall Fan, I've been after any Chaparral in 1/32 I can get my hands on.  In the case of the 1970 Camaro, I just made my own.  I found this Chappy 2D on eBay, and paid about $30 for it.

The Chaparral on eBay

The  Chaparral 2Ds ran against the likes of GT-40s, Chaparral 2Fs, Porsche 906s, Alfa T33/2, and Ferrari 365 P2/3 cars in places like Sebring, Targa Florio, Monza, and Nürburgring.    My intent was to make the car drivable with my GT-40, P4, and MRRC Chaparrals, and the latest Revell/Monogram Porsches and King Cobra.  As you will see in a moment, that required a chassis change, as the original Strombecker chassis wasn't up to snuff.

Upon getting the car, I found it to be in nice shape, although it did have a crack in the roof under the scoop.  I disassembled the body and gave it a thorough washing before fixing the crack and priming and painting the body.  I painted it with Duplicolor products and top coated it with Future.  I received decals from a very nice chap in the UK named Gary that were great.  He sells them on Slotforum and goes by the name LMP.

I painted and detailed what little of the interior there is, including the injectors and the driver.  Flipping that over, I used styrene tubing to create the new mounting points for the chassis.  I affixed these with 2-part epoxy and let them setup overnight.

Turning to the chassis, I stole a Rev/Mono Sebring chassis off the new Chaparral they offer.  I didn't even adjust it from the stock settings, and only pulled the magnets and trued the tires to make it race-ready.

The entire project took about 3 hours and resulted in a very nice Chaparral for my collection.  I really like the new Rev/Mono/MRRC chassis.  I always add weight, pull the magnets, and drop the volts to about 9v.  I enjoy them this way, and really like having a class of cars so closely matched.  Add in the Jim Hall Chaparral factor, and I'm very happy.
